Evaluation 7 - your preliminary task, compared to now, how much do you think you have come on in terms of understanding and creativity of your product?

Evaluation 7 - Looking back at your preliminary task, compared to now, how much do you think you have come on in terms of understanding and creativity of your product?

I have learned a massive amount in my time this year. At the beginning of media, I had doubts whether this was the right subject for me. At the time I found it difficult to understand how media works and how to creative effective and genuine looking pieces. Looking at my preliminary task makes me laugh because it shows clearly how out of tune I was in terms of design and what actually makes someone want to buy or even look at a magazine. In comparison my newest work is incredibly developed. As I have gone along I have picked up small, yet important features that really makes a magazine a magazine.

Comparison:

Front Cover

Hopefully I don't need to point out which cover is my preliminary. On the left you can clearly see that there is no knowledge of magazine design and seems as if it has been randomly displayed with little knowledge of how to do it. Also there is no clear colour or theme. There are four of five different colours on the prelim which looks tacky and very random. The picture manipulation is also poor because if you look closely you can see outlines where the image has been cropped. This looks unprofessional and also the lighting on the models clearly tells you that the image has been modified. On the right however I believe I have overcome these issues. Firstly there is a clear theme. The theme includes a certain font with its variations and also the unusual blue shades throughout the magazine. This shows professionalism as it also helps establish the brand as well as the design. The model has been pictured in natural light and in the correct setting to avoid air brushing a lot of the image. The right cover includes small, but effective features such as photo credits, issue no., and barcode. it even includes a pug which is very common with magazines. I feel after I familiarised myself which general codes and conventions of magazines then I found it fairly comfortable when I came to choosing what and what not to include on the cover.

Contents

The contents page on my preliminary is borderline embarrassing when you compare it up to my new magazine. There was clearly no understanding at all when it came to the contents, but when I started researching my information changed. I learned that the contents is incredibly important and is effectively a cover but with more information. I found the contents page tricky, even now because I kept changing In my head how I wanted it to look. I would say I'm fairly creative which can be a difficult trait because you are always coming up with new ways to lay something out. for example as I was putting the final touches on the contents I had a completely different idea which I believe I would of pursued if it wasn't for the deadline. Once again the use of detail and themes separate this piece of work versus whatever the thing on the left is.

DPS (Double page spread)

the double page spread was interesting because I didn't really realise how much information and work was required in order to make this effective. On the left once again the DPS is scarce on information and lacks any real creative design. The right one I feel is my best work within this project. The biggest obstacle to overcome when designing this page personally was creating the article itself. Once you've actually created the story then you just have to tweak the layout, theme and effects such as, page numbers, anchors and titles.

Overall I really enjoyed this project and appreciate all the help from all my teachers who gave me the correct advise I needed to create this work. I feel that my creative skills have come along way and that media was the right subject after all. I enjoyed the editing and picture manipulation the most because it is you putting your own personally twist on what your designing rather than just displaying what the camera sees. I feel my knowledge of technology has come a long way as at the beginning of this I wasn't 100% familiar with Serif but since then I feel 100% confident when I use Serif and other programs such as Animoto, Prezi or Emaze. I'm also happy that this project has ended because it gives me time to practise using all of these programs before I come back to do another project.

Thanks Luke

Evaluation 3 - What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

When it comes to magazines it is essential that their is a good amount of media convergence. Media convergence is the merging of mass communication outlets. For example bringing the internet to the television or vice versa. Media convergence allows you to advertise one type of media over a number of large media sources. For example 'Complex' magazine who are a huge hip hop magazine producer will advertise their magazine on social media (Facebook, twitter), radio stations, music award billboards. Here are a few examples below:

The image above is Complex magazine using social media for advertisement and an online news feed. This is one type of media convergence. On the right is famous NYC rapper Nas on the red carpet at The Complex music awards. These two images clearly show media convergence.

I have researched a few media distributors that I believe would distribute my media product:

InterMedia Partners - InterMedia Partners are a New York based media distributor business. I believe they would distribute my media product because they already supply other hip hop magazines. one example of this are VIBE magazine and the Source which are two of Americas biggest hip hop magazine brands. I think my magazine is suitable for them to distribute because it belongs to the same bracket as the two magazines I just mentioned. This may be the favourite for being the most likely to distribute.

Bauer Media - Bauer Media are one of the worlds largest media distributors. The German corporation currently hold a portfolio of over 600 magazine brands including large names such as Kerrang! or Q! The biggest issue with Bauer is that they tend to edge towards the rock genre which is a very different genre. This may be doable but less suitable than InterMedia Partners.

Marketforce UK - Marketforce are a UK based magazine distributor. They distribute big names such as 'Hello!' Being located in the UK is helpful because my media product would be in a UK production line. The problem with Marketforce is that they only distribute within the UK and not abroad. My target audience is scattered all over the globe which is the main reason this distribution business isn't suitable. Secondly they don't have a music magazine signed to them yet which means they work in a completely different market.

Overall I think the business that makes the most sense to work with would be InterMedia Partners because they already have experience in distributing large hip hop magazines. Bauer wouldn't be a bad option due to their shear size but InterMedia have the exact knowledge i need to make sure my media product becomes well known in the market.

Evaluation 2 - The images How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The pictures above are a comparison of my magazine against a well known magazine named 'VIBE'.
I think that VIBE and THE INFLUENCE share similar social groups which is why i am comparing these two images.

Posture:
Posture can say a lot when it comes to magazines. The posture can vary depending on what sort of genre the magazine is based on, for example my hip hop theme shows a relaxed and slightly careless stance. These two magazines have models with relaxed postures but yet a serious look. Having a straight/angry look is incredibly popular on hip hop magazines as it reflects the mood and feeling of the genre which is heavily linked to anger and poverty. Having a careless posture helps link the models mood to the story and genre.

Clothing:
Clothing is a big statement in the hip hop industry. Rappers show their success through jewelry or expensive clothing. The two examples above show both models wearing designer clothing along with accessories such as chains, ear studs and glasses. VIBE and THE INFLUENCE share incredibly similar fashion senses. I think my magazine model has been dresses appropriately to make the link to hip hop.

Shot type/angle:
This is where the magazines look slightly different but yet share the same effect. VIBE have decided to have Biggie in the face of the reader whereas i have decided the medium low angle shot is better for my story. My shot steps back and takes in his surroundings whereas vibe have decided to flood their page with a close up as that is the only real focus. VIBE have Biggie staring straight at the reader. The story is about Biggie breaking his silence which is why they have pictured him as if he's speaking directly. My story is looking through the eyes of Zingwe which is why my shot is further back and taking in Zingwe looking out. The low angle shot also gives Zingwe a sense of power which is similar to VIBE who's image has Biggie and P Diddy looking down on you.

In terms of social groups i think my magazine represents them well. My magazine firstly targets hip hop heads of all ages but obviously not too young as hip hop music carries a strong sense of explicit language and situations. My readers will be people who have either come from similar backgrounds and can relate or male teenagers who have interests in it due to social media and popularity. My magazine will appeal to the social group because it contains articles and artists that they will be interested. I have used props, bold fonts/colors and emotion within to really relate to the social groups. They are very basic colors and is seen as slightly unusual as red is usually the most suitable color for hip hop.

Questionaire Analysis

Dolby

Luke- some good analysis here. You need to still upload the evaluation of your prelim task and need to put the rest of the research up asap. Planning should be underway now.
